These are just rough notes - feel free to correct them, add links, etc. from the Benasque, Pyrenees (mountains on spanish/french border) "Modern Cosmology", 27 July - 14 August 2008 meeting initial participant list. These are not official proceedings. The speakers might even disagree that they said anything even vaguely related to what are in these online notes! Don't say you weren't warned.

motivations for MOND/TeVeS

  • C_l's are not independent because S_{1/2} is low
  • cosmic variance for alternative model not known if model not known
  • the antipodal anticorrelation is stronger in the full sky
  • other facts at the scale of about 1 matter horizon radius:
    • Pioneer anomaly
    • Omega_Lambda / onset of acceleration
    • DM
  • so many different strange things at a single scale suggest a single explanation
  • MOND is not relativistic, not dynamic, by its nature cannot say what to expect in many situations
  • TeVeS - tensor vector scalar theory - Bekenstein et al.
    • go from \Del . \Del \phi = 4 \pi G to \Del . (\mu \left(\frac{\Del\phi}{a_o}\right) \Del \phi) = 4\pi G
    • MOND -> TeVeS - dynamical and geodesic metrics are no longer the same (in GR they are the same)
    • Action is needed
    • subset of TeVeS are GEA(?) - generalised Einstein ether theories

  • DGP (example)
  • Birkhoff's Theorem important in all of this.
